On July 8, 2010, Boston, Massachusetts U.S. District Court Judge Joseph L. Tauro ruled that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional with respect to claims brought by seven married same-sex couples and three widowers from Massachusetts. Recent articles and news coverage indicate that many couples are getting married or becoming "domestic partners" solely for the benefits i.e. healthcare insurance and tax savings. However, for those couples who cannot get married in states that don't recognize same-sex marriages or for those couples who simply don't want to get married, you still have options. I recently read Gloria Allred's book Fight Back and Win! and fell in love with her big mouth, courageous spirit and devotion to fighting for victims of abuse, discrimination, and harassment. She's tireless in her efforts and is a phenomenal spokesperson and attorney. She has represented some very high profile clients such as Nicole Simpson's family and Scott Peterson's girlfriend, Amber Frey.

For the last few weeks I have been conducting a domestic homicide study at Jane Doe and providing case summaries to Wendy Murphy's Sexual Violence Legal News. Although the work is meaningful, it weighs heavily on my spirit and I have been having a hard time finding joy. So much so that I'm questioning my lifetime commitment to such work.
